TA100

Welcome to TA100 - A year to celebrate the Territorial Army

TA100 was launched on 1 April 1 2008 to present a year of celebration to mark the contribution of Territorial Soldiers past and present across a century of service. It is also an opportunity for Territorials to thank those whose support we depend on and demonstrate to people across the country what the Territorial Army has to offer.

We are honoured that Her Majesty The Queen has graciously agreed to be the Patron of TA100.

The Territorial ArmHM The Queeny today plays a role as critical to overall military effectiveness as at any point in its history. Indeed, it is difficult to imagine how the Regular Army could meet its present commitments without the combat capacity and professional support provided by Territorial soldiers.

One Army

This fact underpins the One Army philosophy, within which TA soldiers are trained, equipped and supported in the same way as their Regular colleagues and deployed, side by side, in the same theatres of operations.

The TA has changed dramatically over the past 100 years. Its current competence and professionalism has earned the respect of Regular Army colleagues where it counts, in operational environments.

In this, our centenary year, 1,500 Territorial soldiers will be deployed on operations, which accounts for eight per cent of deployed Army capability. Over 15,000 Territorials have served on current operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, with some losing their lives and others returning wounded.

TA100 presents an opportunity for the TA to showcase what the modern Territorials do, raising awareness of the contribution they make in both their military and civilian lives. It is also an opportunity for the nation to recognise and thank Territorials past and present for their commitment to Service, and the contribution they have made and continue to make to security, democracy and the prosperity of the nation.

This contribution made by Reservists is only possible with the continued support and encouragement of families, employers and wider society. This historic anniversary gives the Territorials an opportunity to thank those whose support is vital to the concept of Reserve Service.

The view from the top

General Sir Richard Dannatt said:

Richard Dannatt

“The Territorial Army has been a fundamental part of the British Army since its formation as the Territorial Force in 1908. During the past six years in particular, members of the Territorial Army have made considerable personal sacrifices and have provided indispensable support to current operations. This participation has been at a level seldom seen throughout its distinguished past. It is, therefore, especially appropriate that we mark this significant milestone in the history of the Territorial Army by celebrating the first centenary in a fitting manner.”

2008 is also the 100th Anniversary of the Council of Reserve Forces and Cadets Association (RFCA). The RFCA is responsible for managing the Reserve Forces estate and management of the Army Cadet Force. A number of joint TA100 / RFCA national and regional events will take place during the year, marking the TA’s gratitude to the RFCA for 100 years of support.
